< My proud ancestor >
- Hero of Korea, Yi Sun-sin -
Department : Nursing
Yi Sun-sin was a Korean naval commander, famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty, and is well-respected for his exemplary conduct on and off the battlefield not only by Koreans, but by Japanese admirals as well. His title of Samdo Sugun Tongjesa, literally meaning "Naval Commander of the Three Provinces," was the title for the commander of the Korean navy until 1896. Perhaps his most remarkable military achievement occurred at the Battle of Myeongnyang. Despite never having received naval training or participating in naval combat prior to the war, and constantly being outnumbered, he went to his grave as one of few admirals in world history who remained undefeated after commanding as many naval battles as he did (at least 23). He died at the Battle of Noryang on December 16, 1598. His famous dying words were, "The battle is at its height...beat my war drums...do not announce my death." The royal court eventually bestowed various honors upon him, including a posthumous title of Chungmugong (Duke of Loyalty and Warfare), an enrollment as a Seonmu Ildeung Gongsin (First-class military order of merit during the reign of Seonjo), and two posthumous offices, Yeonguijeong (Prime Minister), and the Deokpung Buwongun(The Prince of the Court from Deokpung).
Jwibulnori (쥐불놀이) is a popular Korean game. It's a play to make a fire on paddies and fields to exterminate harmful insects and rats during the first full moon of a year in the lunar calendar, which is the national holiday in Korea. Also, this game has a meaning to wish for good health.
People make a torchlight on a basket or a container tied with a strong string, going out, playing with, twirling it. Sometimes, there's a fight between other village members. They play the game until midnight and after enjoying the game, they make a fire on the farmland.

hwang eun ji laura
My first name is Hwang. So I searched Ancestor who has same first name.
His name is Hwang Hui.
Hwang Hui (8 March 1363 – 28 February 1452) was a politician of the Goryeo dynasty and Joseon Dynasty, who once served as prime minister of the Joseon Dynasty from 1431 to 1449 .
<True Leadership>
Hwang served as the chief state councilor for 18 years, but he never pursued personal greed. He lived in a thatched-roof house that leaked rain and tended a vegetable garden himself. He was so frugal that he had only a single piece of official uniform throughout his life.
He also introduced a new system to select talented people based on their abilities, regardless of their social positions. One of the gifted people who benefited from the system was Jang Young-sil(장영실), the most prominent scientist of the Joseon era who was born as a slave but rose to a high-level government position with his outstanding ability.
History evaluates Hwang as follows. “Hwang Hui was generous and prudent. As a minister, he had eyes to see the world and thought deeply. He was thrifty when managing his home and did not show his emotions such as joy or anger. He was fair and impartial when discussing something and tried hard to follow principles.”
When the honest and honorable minister died in 1452 at the age of 90, all people shed tears and mourned intensely. Indeed, Hwang is remembered as one of the most respected government officials in Korean history.
A Politician of Principle and Firm Belief
<A Politician of Principle and Firm Belief >
Hwang held many government posts to exert great influence on the efforts to stabilize the early Joseon Dynasty.
He made remarkable achievements in many areas, contributing to strengthening national defense, establishing four forts and six posts on the northern border and improving agriculture. He served as state councilor during the reign of King Sejong the Great to devote his entire life to caring for people as a man of strict integrity.
The minister never betrayed his principle and convictions in politics. King Taejong, the third ruler of Joseon, forced his first son, Prince Yangnyeong, to give up his position as crown prince and proclaimed his third son, Prince Chungnyeong, the crown prince instead. The third prince became King Sejong the Great later. But Hwang vociferously advocated the principle that the first son of the king’s legitimate wife should succeed to the throne.
Hwang remained adamant in his views out of concerns that going against the principle might jeopardize the fledgling kingdom that was founded amid many difficulties. He was sent into exile for offending King Taejong.
The upright, outspoken minister was demoted twice and lived in exile for four years during his service to the monarchy.
<Embracing the World with Generosity >
One day, two servant girls quarreled noisily. One of them ran toward their master to complain that the other girl was wrong. The master nodded his head and said, “Yes, you are right. She is wrong.”
Then, the other girl, unable to control her anger, also protested her innocence. Listening to her, the master also said, “Yeah, you are right. She is wrong.”
Watching this, the master’s wife criticized him, saying “How can you manage important state affairs as a minister while judging like that at home?”
This time around, the master didn’t say his wife was right. On the contrary, he chided her for being so inconsiderate. He said, “Servants are all beloved people given to this country by heaven. How can I treat them only with strict standards?” This man is Hwang Hui, one of the most celebrated premiers of the 500-year Joseon Kingdom. As a politician of principle and firm belief, he was renowned for his leadership, characterized by generosity, a profound love for people and humanism.
For these reasons, I respect him.

1. What is the name of the activity?
Talchum (Ex. the traditional Korean Bongsan masked dance )
2. What is the history of th activity?
Mask–dance dramas, or talchum, originates from morality plays by Buddhist monks and for exorcism in Korea. Today, they are played throughout different regions in the country as forms of entertainment, gradually losing religious meaning. For instance, contemporary mask–dance dramas may portrayal the foibles and misadventures of a group of apostate Buddhist monks; a foolish aristocrat outsmarted by his servant; and dangerous tigers who gobble up unsuspecting children. These dramas encourage audiences to laugh at themselves through acting while performers rhythmically jump, leap and squat to the sounds of a small percussion group.
3. Why do people do the activity?
Korean mask dance dramas are not just dances performed by masked dancers but also include significant dramatic content with masked characters portraying people, animals and sometimes supernatural beings. These folk dramas reflect the frustrations felt by the lower classes towards the Confucian literati Yangban, due to the latter's treatment of the commoners, show the life of the common man and process social problems such as monks who ignore their precepts and men who cast off their old wives.
